The Law has authority over a person only while he is living. No matter how numerous or serious his or her crimes, at death the criminal is released from the Law (in a temporal sense). Believers in Jesus Christ have died to the Law through the body of Christ, and now having been released from the Law, they serve in newness of the Spirit.
