On January 3, 1960 a group of committed believers met for their first Sunday service at The Toledo Tennis Club in Sylvania. Not long after that meeting, they officially incorporated as Bethany Baptist Church, adopting articles of faith and a constitution.
Five years later, 5.2 acres were purchased on the corner of Flanders and Alexis Roads where the present facility stands. There, the Word of God has faithfully been proclaimed, and the acreage has served as the stage for an outdoor Christmas outreach, the Journey to Bethlehem, which attracted nearly 1,400 visitors in 2009. The grounds have also been utilized for church picnics and youth activities.
In 1991, the Bethany family decided to re-launch under the name of Bethany Community Fellowship, choosing to associate with the Baptist General Conference (now Converge). Bethany is an independent autonomous local church.
Early in this new century Bethany called the present pastor, who has worked closely with the missions committee to formulate a strong missions program. Together, they and the congregation have developed a cooperative and supportive association with the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism, Shepherds, Baptist Children’s Home, and Missionary Training International. Along with these endeavors, Bethany is involved in aiding several local missionary arms, including a ministry once a month at Alexis Gardens, a retirement facility. Since 2004, BCF has sent congregants to Mexico, Romania, Africa, the Dominican Republic, Taiwan, Thailand and New York State for short-term missionary endeavors.
In 2010 the sanctuary was remodeled and architectural plans are in place to retrofit the upper level of the facility for suitable and functional service.
